Material anchors for conceptual blends
نویسنده
چکیده
Reasoning processes require stable representations of constraints. There are two principal ways to achieve stability in conceptual models. First, the conceptual models that anthropologists call cultural models achieve representational stability via a combination of intrapersonal and interpersonal processes. Second, the association of conceptual structure with material structure can stabilize conceptual representations. This is an old and pervasive cognitive strategy. Conceptual blending theory provides a useful framework for considering the joint contributions and mutual constraints of mental and material structure. Projecting material structure into a blended space can stabilize the conceptual blend. I call an input space from which material structure is projected into a blend a ‘material anchor’ for the blend. The term material anchor is meant to emphasize the stabilizing role of the material structure. In this article, I will present and discuss a number of examples of materially anchored blends, which depend to different degrees on material structure. Materially anchored blends vary on a number of complexly related dimensions, including the extent to which the blend relies on the presence of material structure in the perceptual field, the complexity of the material structure, and whether the material structure was designed to support the blend or is used opportunistically. # 2005 Elsevier B.V. “I was in that room!”: Conceptual integration of content and context in a writer’s vs. a prosecutor’s description of a murder
This paper compares a writer’s and a prosecutor’s description of a murder, both involving the integration of the discourse content with the communicative context. I suggest that this content-context blend is essential to the meaning and communicative effect of these discourses. This blend also seems fundamental to intersubjectivity skills such as empathy, ordinary understanding, and the use of ...

Drawing upon cognitive science theories of conceptual blending [1] and material anchors [2], as well as recent neuroscience results regarding mirror neurons [3], we argue that animated visual graphics, as embodied images whose understanding relies on our perceptual and motor apparati, connect both material and mental notions of images. Animated visual images mobilize a reflective process in whi...
متن کاملWhat’s in a Diagram? On the Classification of Symbols, Figures and Diagrams
In this paper I analyze the cognitive function of symbols, figures and diagrams. The analysis shows that although all three representational forms serve to externalize mental content, they do so in radically different ways, and consequently they have qualitatively different functions in mathematical cognition. Symbols represent by convention and allow mental computations to be replaced by epist...

We argue, from a perspective integrating cognitive science and the arts, that interactive animated visual graphics, as embodied images whose understanding relies on users’ perceptual and motor apparatuses, connect both mental and material notions of images. متن کاملTowards concept anchoring for cognitive robots
We present a model for anchoring categorical conceptual information which originates from physical perception and the web. The model is an extension of the anchoring framework which is used to create and maintain over time semantically grounded sensor information. Using the augmented anchoring framework that employs complex symbolic knowledge from a commonsense knowledge base, we attempt to gro...
